A Son is Given

2 Dec

“…Unto us a Son is given…”

Isaiah 9:6

On Monday morning, I wrote this verse  in its entirety on my classroom whiteboard. With December only a few days away at that point and my tiny Christmas tree decorated in the corner, a Christmas verse was in order! What I didn’t know was how much the short phrase sandwiched in the center would consume my thinking since then!

“…Unto us a Son is given…”

As I’ve read the verse over the past few days, this small phrase has seemed to stand out unlike ever before.

Did you notice who the recipients of this Great Gift were?

Yes, us! In our sinful and broken state, He chose us.

And what was this Gift we were so undeserving of?

“A Son..,” and not just any Son, “His only begotten Son.” (John 3:16)

He gave His Son to us!

He gave though He knew there would be no room in the inn that night.

He gave though He knew Joseph and Mary would have to flee to Egypt to protect the Christ Child from Herod’s decree.

He gave though He knew His place on the Throne next to Him would be empty for thirty-three and half years.

He gave though He knew He’d have to watch Him wrestle all night long in Gethsemane’s garden.

He gave though He knew it meant the Sinless taking on the sins of all mankind.

He gave though He knew He’d have to watch Him beaten, mocked and spat upon.

He gave though He knew He’d have to turn His back as we nailed His Precious Gift to a tree.

He gave because He knew it was the only Way.

He gave that “we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9) a life “more abundantly!” (John 10:10)

He gave so that “whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life!” (John 3:16)

It is an overwhelming thought!

He gave! He gave us His Son!

As the lights twinkle on the tree next to me and the first few gifts find their home beneath it’s branches, I am rejoicing tonight in the greatest Gift ever given!

“For unto us a child is born, UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6

I know exactly what you mean. This same thing has been on my heart so much lately. What an amazing thought! We are nothing, and He gave everything for us and to us! It makes me feel so small, so thankful.
