The Sufficiency of Scripture

21 Oct

It’s been five years since I found It. And with everyday that passes, I continue to discover It.

I find it hard to remember the days when I only opened It in Church, when the black words upon white paper were not much more to me than that.

I thank God everyday for afflicting me that I might learn His statutes. (Psalm 119:71)

And even though I know the blessings that being in the Book brings, there are times when I still find myself neglecting to feast upon It as I should.

This afternoon He blessed me with a few moments of quiet time in the hours of my day that are usually the busiest. And in that hour, He reminded me of the Sufficiency of Scripture.

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.”

Psalm 19:7-8

His Word is “perfect” meaning entire and without blemish. Perfect enough to show us our need of salvation draw our sinful hearts to the Savior. “Perfect” meaning complete. Complete enough to continue the process of sanctification in us though we battle the flesh daily.

His Word is “sure, making wise the simple.” After It’s perfectness brings salvation, It helps us to “grow in grace” (2 Peter 3:18) giving wisdom, revealing His will when we don’t know which way to go. It is “sure” meaning to build up or support, foster as a parent or nurse. Like our earthly father’s advice when we need to make a big decision, it’s in Scripture we find direction, help to assist us in becoming the Christians He saved us to be.

His Word is right.”When life’s circumstances and conditions are constant only in the fact that they are constantly changing, God’s Word is always “right,” constant, continually the same. Having something that is constant when everything else isn’t definitely “rejoices the heart!” I can’t imagine how different the last five years would have been without the consistency of Scripture! As people have come and gone, as He has closed doors and opened others, His Word has remained.

His Word is “clean” when we are everything but. It’s the Only thing that can “enlighten the eyes” when we walk in spiritual darkness. It reveals our sin and cleans us up when we’ve fallen yet again. It reveals areas of sin that may not even be visible to others and at times are even hidden from us. It searches the deep places that truly make up who we are. But It doesn’t leave us in a hopeless state of shame and regret. It gives the hope and assurance of His forgiveness that we might seek to live in His Light.

Scripture is multi-faceted, meeting the needs of every aspect of our being. It is “quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb. 4:12) It is food when our souls hunger. It is water when life leaves us thirsty.

It is sufficient and I am so thankful for the Life It gives!
