Like a passing shadow…

24 Aug

I’ve been known to rush the present, long for the future and live for the next season of life while in the midst of the current one.

The Lord has really helped me to savor this summer season, but every once in a while I still have a Me Day and struggle with impatience and discontent.

I was challenged by the final verse of Ecclesiastes chapter six this morning.

“For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?”

Ecclesiastes 6:12

A shadow.

As a child did you ever try to catch yours?

No matter how hard you tried, your efforts were futile.

Every time you turned, it turned, escaping your grasp.

Though no longer chasing it in the twilight hours of a summer evening, we’re still pursuing our shadow.

Though our days are often long, the years our short.

We can’t catch them. The hours tick swiftly by, slipping from our fingers.

Just as the sun sinks below the horizon, the shadow disappears.

A lot like life.

It’s gone before we know it.

You blink and your babies are beginning Kindergarten.

You turn your back for a minute and your toddlers are teenagers.

It seems like only yesterday that your little girl was playing dress up and now she stands at the altar in a beautiful wedding dress.

Your mind recalls the blond-haired boy driving his Matchbox truck along the sidewalk as he pulls out of the driveway for the first time.

If you could only push the pause button.

Suddenly the long days don’t seem so long. And you realize just how quickly your Shadow passes.

A quick lesson in contentment from a simple verse of Scripture.

I Love my Lord! 🙂
