A Very Good Friday!

1 Apr

I can’t believe how quickly Easter has come this year. Tomorrow is already Good Friday and it seems like we just came through Christmas!

One of my first thoughts last year as I sat down to ponder the meaning of Good Friday was, “Why do we call it Good Friday?” It was then that I found these reasons in the Word!

“Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:  And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;” Ephesians 2:11-20

It is “Good” because it was on that Friday over 2,000 years ago that our sin died and our debt was paid! This was the day the Way was made that we who were “far off” could be “made nigh by the Blood of Christ!” (v. 13) This is the day that we could cease sacrifice and the spotless lambs could cease to die because the Spotless Lamb of God had died ONCE for ALL! This is the day that the “middle wall of partition between us” (v. 14) was broken down and the veil in the temple was rent! We are no longer separated by our sinfulness because He was made sin for us! We are now permitted to draw near to God through His Only Son! This is the day that He “abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances” (v. 15) The power of the law that brought knowledge of sin was cancelled on this Good Friday! This is the day that we who “were without Christ” (v. 12) were given the Way by which to receive Him! As “aliens” and “strangers” (v. 12) we had “no hope” of ever obtaining a new position until this Good Friday! Now we are “NO MORE strangers and foreigners, but FELLOW CITIZENS with the saints, and of the household of God!” (v. 19)

Truly this is a Good Friday! 🙂 As they walked Jesus up the dusty road to die on an old rugged Cross, sin was reigning for it’s final moments. As He hung suffering for your sin and mine, sin was about to die! As He cried “IT IS FINISHED” (John 19:30) it became a very Good Friday! My “Jesus Christ HIMSELF” (v. 20) and His finished work on Calvary makes it a VERY GOOD FRIDAY indeed! 🙂

I pray that this weekend will bring much time to spend searching out “the unsearchable riches of Christ!” (Ephesians 3:8)  As I study the Crucifixion there is so much to be grasped! I love my Lord but oh how I long to love Him more! 🙂

May your Good Friday be good, indeed!
