Perfect Peace

24 Feb

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee.”

 Isaiah 26:3

It’s just like my Lord to do “all things well!” (Mark 7:37) It continually amazes me that  He never skimps on giving His children the very best, and the same is true when we look at this verse.

You see, it’s not just peace that He gives but perfect peace!

Wouldn’t peace be good enough?

Not for the Lord! During His earthly ministry, He told us with His own words in John 14:27,  “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Ephesians 2:14 clearly tells us that He is the peace we long for.

His peace is not merely a good feeling, but the ability to have a quiet heart when everything around us pushes us to be anything but. When questions fill our minds. When uncertainty seems to prevail. When a thousand thoughts crowd out our ability to focus on anything. This verse of Scripture points us to peace, perfect peace, found in staying our minds upon Christ.

To “stay ” means to prop or to lean upon. When we try to think about it all, we are quickly overwhelmed. Trying to figure it on our own makes things even worse, but when we prop our minds up with everything that He is, peace is possible.

It is for this peace that I am praying tonight. Peace for my own heart and peace for Jarrett as he faces his open heart surgery tomorrow.

I was blessed by this portion of an email Linda sent our family earlier in the week:

Emotions are on a roller coaster, nerves are raw, and the stress level is to the max – but all of this pales compared to what my Jarrett is enduring.  He is truly one special young man.  And through it all he wants GOD to get the glory as he feels that he is GOD’s instrument and that somewhere, somehow, someone will come to know the Lord as a result of this trial – what a tribute!!!!!!!!!
Just please please continue your prayers and pray especially hard tomorrow that the cardiologist has made the right decision in going forth with the open-heart surgery and ask the Lord to guide the hands of the surgeon as they perform Jarrett’s surgery.

I think this shows you clearly what an exceptional teenager he is. These days few young people (or older people!)  are interested in the salvation of another especially if it comes at their own expense. As Jarrett faces this surgery tomorrow, he desires that God get the glory.

So as we strive to stay “stayed” upon the Lord, let’s pray that the He would enable Jarrett, Linda and the rest of their family on to do the same throughout the day tomorrow and in the weeks of recovery ahead.

Thankfully this perfect peace is not limited to basic everyday circumstances but is continually perfect even as we face the not so everyday occurences that stretch and test us in a greater way.

I will definitely keep Jarrett and his family in my prayers today. He sounds like a remarkable young man.

    Love you
