Open my eyes!

8 Mar

BEEP…BEEP…BEEP…BEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPP! We all know the dreaded sound… as we drift out of a deep sleep, our alarm clocks annoyingly remind us that it’s time to wake up. Frustrated that it’s morning already, we throw off the blankets and drowsily begin our day. Last night, I came across this verse while reading one of my all time favorite Psalms and it challenged me to WAKE UP!

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” Psalm 119:18

Unfortunately as the fleshly human beings that we are it is way too easy for us to “fall asleep” in regards to things of God. Sure, we go through the motions, but we’ve been doing that so long it’s easy to do while half asleep! We miss so much of what God wants us to receive because we sleepily (spiritually speaking) make our way through Christian service. Instead of welcoming the opportunities wide-eyed and excited about what God has in store, we all too often walk through our Christian lives ASLEEP! David was not one who hit the snooze button when it came to his spiritual life, but his cry in this verse proves that he realized what a struggle this really is in the Christian life. He realized that in ourselves we have no spiritual energy or ability to even open our own eyes  much less be able to accomplish anything after we finally wake up! The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:14 that  “…natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” David cried, Lord “OPEN THOU MINE EYES!” because He couldn’t do it on his own.

God’s Word is so full of such incredible Truth that our human minds cannot even begin to fathom it! If we spent all day ,every day searching out the Scripture, we still would not scratch the surface! David understood that God’s Word was filled with “WONDROUS THINGS” and desired that his spiritual eyes of understanding be opened unto them. We would greatly benefit from  the wondrous things we would find in It’s pages if we would cry “Open thou mine eyes!”

But even greater than the  personal benefit we are sure to gain from “waking up” spiritually are the benefits gained by the lost! It is most importantly for the Gospel’s sake that we need to “AWAKE to righteousness, and SIN NOT…” as Paul commands the Corinthian believers. The Lost are watching and they shouldn’t see sleepy Christians!!!! We are called to be “REDEEMING the TIME because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16) First Peter tells us that we “should SHOW FORTH the praises of Him who hath called (us) out of darkness into His MARVELOUS LIGHT!” (ch. 2 v. 9) He quickened us, made us alive, woke us up!! Is it right that we would be content with rolling over and falling back to sleep?

So today may our prayer be, “Lord, OPEN THOU MINE EYES, that I may behold WONDROUS THINGS out of thy law, and so that the lost can see a WIDE AWAKE Christian who is REDEEMING THE TIME AND SHOWING FORTH YOUR PRAISES!”

This morning, a missionary friend of ours said it this way, “We DON’T have tomorrow, we HAVE
TODAY!” It’s true that we don’t have time to sleep in today and get up when our spiritual alarm clock sounds again in the the morning! May God OPEN OUR EYES TODAY!!!
